Bread Rabri (sweet dish)

Ingredients:
8 slices - bread
1 cup - sugar
1 liter - milk
3 tbsp - chopped almonds, pistachios and cashew nuts
5 tbsps - ghee
3 strands - saffron, soaked in a little water
Method
  1. Cut each slice of bread into 2 breadth wise, so that there are 16 pieces in all.
  2. Heat ghee and fry bread till slightly crisp and golden on both sides. Arrange in a serving dish.
  3. Dissolve the sugar in approximately � cup water.
  4. Boil till sugar is dissolved and syrup is thickish.
  5. Pour half the syrup over the bread.
  6. Boil milk till less than half the quantity is left, stirring all the time.
  7. Pour in remaining sugar syrup.
  8. Add strands of saffron previously soaked in a little water.
  9. Cook till about 1 � - 2 cups of rabri are ready.
  10. Pour rabri over the bread soaked in syrup.
  11. Garnish with nuts and serve hot or cold.
